Endure and persist; this pain will turn to your good. - Ovid

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. - Romans 5:1-5

Big Workout. It was warm again today, but insanely windy. I wanted to do tempo intervals as a big workout, but it didn't go as planned. Still an okay workout, plus I got all the mileage in, which is important. Warmed up at a brisk pace (6:20-6:30) for two miles, then did a 4-mile tempo. Splits were about 5:20, 5:50 (into the wind), 5:15, 5:15 (with the wind). Jogged a 3-minute recovery, and then did another two miles, about 5:20-low and then a 5:30. The windy was really bugging me, and I was about to turn to go straight into it (had been a cross-wind for the past two miles), so I cut it short. While going straight into the wind, I could barely sustain 7:30 pace. Once I got the cross-wind again, I kept it brisk, around 6:30-6:40 for the last few miles. Averaged 6:25/mile for the 15-mile run. So not a waste of time, but not what I wanted either. Other than the half marathon race, all of my sustained workouts (non-intervals) have been sub-par.

Hey, what do you think of the Kinvara? I've got a pair of Tangents I love, but are considering the Kinvaras once they wear out. I see you have almost 500 miles on yours- I didn't think they would last that long. Any wear/cushion issues?

Nice miles for that wind Paul!

Jon - I like them quite a bit. They are lighter than the tangent, and have no heel raise (truly minimalist). That said, I actually think the tangent are a little bit "faster", just because it's firmer and more stable. The best description I've read of the Kinvara is that they feel like running barefoot on a gym mat. Kind of mushy and not real responsive. But that said, they are still faster than a normal trainer simply because they are so light. Also, they will really work out your feet, calves, and achilles, which is half point of minimalism. They are very comfortable, and seem to get better the more I wear them.

Mine are wearing pretty well, and I think I can double the mileage I already have on them without problem. However, I am only 128lb, and a very efficient runner, so I'm not very hard on my shoes. A 200 lb elephant-like runner like yourself might burn through them faster. ;-)

Thanks for the response. But a 200 lb elephant? I've only got one response: www.milliseconds.com/participants/final_list/overall/140690 (aka 2008 TOU 1/2)

You got beat by a 200 lb elephant! What does that make you?

For some reason, my trash-talking link keeps cutting off. Should be .../overall/140690

Paul - sorry, I am the only elephant in the room.

I have both the Tangents and the Kinvara's are like them both but for different distance and reasons. I will try to stick with the Tangent's for marathons but Kinvara's are good for up to HM distance...light weight and decent support. I agree with Paul that I still think the Tangent's are a better overall shoe. That beingn said, Saucony is discontinuing the Tangents, so your next best options are the Fastwitch or the new Progrid Mirage...neither of which I have tried but will soon. Fastwitch very lightweight but more like a Tangent base, Mirage in the same weight range as the Tangent but built on the Kinvara platform.

That's true, Cody- even Sasha called you an elephant, so it must be true.
