Endure and persist; this pain will turn to your good. - Ovid

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. - Romans 5:1-5

Did the Bear River Loop, with 7 miles of tempo. Most miles were around 5:55 or so, but I had a 5:45 and a 5:40 in the middle. Turned it down with a few miles left and cruised at 6:30-6:40 for a couple miles, and then did 6 strides up the hill on the last mile. 6:07/mile average pace for the run. Didn't feel especially great, but not terrible either.

AM - lower Hyde Park out-and-back. 8 miles, 7:00/mile average. Achilles is still bothering me a little bit.

PM - Summit Dr loop with Seth. Saw a bunch of deer in the cemetery, which Seth liked. 8:00/mile pace. Seth has gotten heavier over the winter, and the hills have gotten bigger, so the stroller is tough going.

Ran from work and did the Planet Walk - Landfill Loop. Planet Walk is almost clear, just a little ice left. It was a bit warmer today, and very nice to run. I walked the dog, so to speak. Right achilles feels about the same as yesterday. Running easy is fine (no pain and doesn't make things worse), but no speedwork or hills until it gets better. 6:59/mile average.

Ran with special guest Walter this morning. I intended to run the back roads up to Richmond (which is nice and flat), but then we bumped into Carson Cambell running with some of his team, and he ran with us for a while, and amidst the confusion we ended up going all the way up Smithfield Canyon, which is the exact opposite of what I had planned. Carson left us midway, so Walter and I kept going until the road got really bad, then we came back down. The probably was that we only had 9 miles, and we needed 16. So then we ran a loop to Hyde Park. Still needed a few more after than, so then we did a small loop on Summit Dr and back to my house. 16.5 miles total, averaged 7:15/mile.

13.000.003.000.000.0016.00

Today I ran a local race, the Smithfield Shamrock Shuffle 5K. By "local", I mean, "race that I can run to from my house. The Smithfield Rec Center puts it on along with the Cache Sun 'n' Snow Runners. I like running the S'n'S races, because they know how to put on a race and they are nice folks. Plus, this race was only $5, and you get $1 off if you wear green. So I wore green.

I slept in until 7AM today, and then got up and decided to do a short run to get some extra miles early (since it was supposed to snow later), and to try to shake out some of the crud in my legs. I ran from my house down to the race start line (about a mile), and then ran the 5K course. The first half mile is a pretty decent uphill with about 125 ft of gain. I run it several times a week over the course of my daily runs, and it's no fun. The next 1.5 miles is a nice, fast downhill. The route loses about 230 ft during this stretch. The final mile is a gradual but noticeable uphill, about 70 ft of climb over the mile. Due to the uphill start and uphill finish of this loop course, I rank it as a moderately difficult route. Not as hard as Striders 5K, but certainly much slower than First Dam Run, TOU 5K, Heart of Holladay, Draper Days, and courses like that. For my shakeout run, I just did the route pretty slow. Felt like garbage.

I went back home after the first run (about 5.5 miles total), ate breakfast, read, drank some coffee, and put some finishing touches on the new Wasatch Back Relay maps. Typical Saturday morning stuff. At about 9:15AM, I realized that I should probably get back down to the Rec Center and register, since the race starts at 10AM. I found a few dollar bills, stuffed them in my tights, and headed down.

Registered, warmed up a little more, talked to some people, met some new people. The typical pre-race stuff I really like. Eventually, the race management herded us all up to the start line, and they got the race going, pretty close to on time.

Being a small, local fun-run, a few kids bolted out to the front, most notably a junior high girl and a junior high boy. The girl faded pretty quick, but the boy kept putting distance on me (keep in mind we're going up a 4% grade hill). I just tried to run steady and not too hard, especially since I wasn't really in the mood to run hard today. Near the top of the hill, before the turn, I started reeling the kid in. I was kind of feeling sorry for him, knowing that he would certainly die a painful death the rest of the race, but was also waxing nostalgic a bit for those days of my own youth, when I could just sprint up hills without fearing the consequences.

We turned the corner from 600 S onto 1000 W, and uphill turned into downhill. I passed the kid, and just tried to keep a strong push on the downhill, and also regain my breath at the same time. Soon, I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me, and I knew the rest of the way would be a time trial/workout. I hit Mile 1 in 5:16, which was faster than I thought it would be. Turns out that I have a favorable cross-wind/tailwind. Garmin time matched pretty well with the road mark. Cache S'n'S use a wheel for a lot of their courses, so they are usually pretty accurate.

The downhill flattened out a bit as I neared Hyde Park, but then the route made another right turn onto 4400 N, and I had another mile or so of fairly big downhill. I just tried to enjoy the ride, knowing that I was going to get uphill (and a headwind) for the last mile. My Mile 2 split was 4:57. The crosswind was not favorable in this direction, which slowed it down slightly, but not much.

Right after Mile 2, I turned the corner onto 300 E. Now it was a gradual 1% uphill, and also a mild to moderate headwind. I wasn't feeling too motivated to finish out the race with a bang, so just tried to run steady and reasonably strong. And behold, I made it back to 600 S, and turned the corner. Hit Mile 3 split in 5:23.

At this point, I had about a 2% uphill to the Rec Center/Skyview parking lot, and then a left turn into the lot, and into the chute. Pretty much just coasted in, victorious, but lazy. I averaged 5:30-pace for the last 0.1. I ended up stopping at the beginning of the chute, but the finish line was at the end of the chute. So my garmin time was 16:21, but my offical time was 16:27, since I walked it in. Ah well.

Second place was a Mountain Crest freshman, about 17:30 (good effort). Surprisingly, the 7th grader who rabbited out so hard was 3rd place with 17:50. I was actually quite impressed, given his age and race strategy. Kid probably has a future with running.

I never felt that great during the race, and wasn't really in the mood to race, but that's why I thought it would be good to do a race. Sometimes I need a little push like that. My next race (Striders Half) will hopefully be a little bit spunkier, and then my third race, a peak race, I'll hopefully have all the cobwebs kicked out and fire on all cylinders. My achilles has been concerning me since early February, so I've backed off on speedwork, tempos, hills, and strides, which certainly hurt 5K speed as well, but my endurance is still pretty good. Hopefully the speed will come around. I'll have to see how my achilles responds to racing flats and a race effort, and gauge my future training off that. I'm hoping I can start getting back into some quality work again. The achilles has not been hurting while running lately, but is a little sore to the touch when I push on it the right way.

After the race, I talked to some more people, met some neighbors, etc. Decided to stick around for the awards, and glad I did, because I won an exercise ball in the raffle, and then a $20 Al's gift certificate for 1st place. Not bad for a $4 race that I didn't even need to drive to.

After awards, I joined up with the Red Rooster and with DaveS, and we shuttled up to my house, where I changed my shoes, and then we cooled down for 6 miles by doing an out-and-back to Smithfield Canyon via Summit Dr. During the time of the awards, the weather really took a turn for the worse. The wind picked up about three-fold, and it also started snowing. The first part of our cooldown was just terrible, as we were going straight into the wind, but then it got better after that, and the last four miles were decent. I'm just glad it wasn't that windy during the race.

Anyway, kind of a "beh" start to the racing year, but that's how I wanted it. Time to eeeaase back into racing, so mission accomplished.

AM - 8 very easy miles. Ran out past Mack Park and then to Forrester Acres and back on the paved trail. Still very icy around Forrester (I took a big digger on that ice last week, forgot to mention it). Then came back up Summit to Hillside, and then went south a little ways on the canal trail. The paved part is fine, of course, and the dirt section I was on was clear of snow, although it was mud frozen over, so rather poor footing. But we are getting closer to running on dirt again.

PM - 4 miles with Seth, Summit-Cemetery Loop. 7:45/mile pace.

Awesome evening to run, and it's great to be in shorts and a t-shirt. I run-mmuted home from work. Tried to tempo for most of the way. The last 3.5 miles were on the canal trail, which was about 80% good, with patches of snow or mud. Not much snow actually, but the mud slowed me down in places. But it was nice to run on again. Felt good, and averaged 6:22/mile for the run.

AM - 4 miles on the canal trail. Wore the NB 790s, and enjoyed it. It was a cold morning, but very clear and beautiful out. The sun was on the Wellsvilles, with dark clouds behind them, and it was very striking, great view. 6:42/mile average.

AM.2 - ran down to the bus stop from my house. Missed the bus, so then Stacy had to take me to work.

PM - Run-mmuted home from work, 8.25 miles. It was kind of nasty - snowing with a head-wind - and I was unprepared for it, wearing shorts. But then when I went from Logan into North Logan, it all mysteriously stopped, the sun came out, and wind died. I looked back into Logan, and there was still a black cloud over it. Glad I was going north. I was able to enjoy the second half of the run, and kept an honest pace the whole way. Averaged 6:29/mile for the run.

Did a harder, longer run today, and it was gloriously nice out, so I enjoyed every minute of it. Ran from my house to Saddleback Rd and out west of Smithfield, and then headed north on the county roads up toward Richmond. Lots of dirt roads out there, which is nice, and I have great, clear views of Cache Valley in every direction. Felt good the whole way. Splits were:

6:04, 6:13, 5:48, 5:46, 5:43, 5:50, 5:42, 5:52, 5:49, 5:51, 5:43, 5:50, 5:56, 5:54, 6:02, 6:50. If I throw out my first two miles, which was warmup, and my last mile, which was all uphill, then I averaged 5:46/mile for the gut of the run. With the slow miles, it was a 5:55/mile average. Definitely a good run, and I think my body has adjusted to the mileage increase and wants to run hard again. I still get some soreness in my achilles, so I continue to work on it (lot of stretching, calf raises, ultrasound). Hopefully it will hold up, and continue to not inhibit my stride. It really doesn't hurt at all while running, just some soreness when I massage on it.

Run-commuted home from work today, and did a fartlek work: 2-minutes hard, 1 minute recovery, x 10 repeats. Warmed up 3 miles at brisk pace: 6:12, 6:06, 6:01. Then started the fartlek.

Pretty consistent pacing, which was good. Terrain for that route home is mostly flat, with some slight inclines here and there. Safe to assume that the slower intervals were on uphills, faster ones on downhills. Felt pretty good, although it was plain to me that the speedwork was badly needed. After I got home, I grabbed Seth, and we ran down to Mack Pack and along the path there, and back home. 12 miles total. 6:20/mile for the entire run.

Faster miles were due to slight downhill, slower miles at the end due to slight uphill plus wearing down plus really needing a portapot. Found a portapot near Skyview thanks to new home construction, and then continued on, cooled down for a few miles on the canal trail. 6:25/mile for the entire run. Decent workout, given that I'm at little worn down from the week's mileage.

Met Carson at Mack Park, and then I had to take a pit stop at the 7/11. Feeling much better, we then went out to the cemetery do to a workout of 6-8x1000m. Each big cemetery loop is almost 1000m, and I figured I could get the exact distance by adding on a little bit to the loop. After I got home, I checked my start/finish line on gmap, and determined I was a little bit short, more like 985m, which equates to about 3 seconds based on the pace I was running.

 Interval Adjusted Time
 1 3:07
 2 3:10
 3 3:08
 4 3:06
 5 3:06
 6 3:07

So I was hitting most of my splits in 3:03-3:05, which equate to 3:06-3:08. I was pretty pumped about being able to run 1000s this fast, this early in the season, definitely a good sign for Saturday. It was a windy day this morning, but it turned out that we had a head wind on most of the downhill portions, and a tailwind for the inclines, so that worked out pretty well. I really like using the cemetery loop for intervals. It seemed to go by faster than on a track, plus it better simulates road conditions, as the loop as both uphills and downhills (but not too steep anywhere), and it is a nice, level blacktop surface with no traffic. I'll definitely keep doing workouts there.

I stopped the workout after 6 intervals, since it was my first session of the year, plus I have a race on Saturday. Didn't want to push too hard, and I was definitely feeling it by the end.
