Endure and persist; this pain will turn to your good. - Ovid

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. - Romans 5:1-5

Got a good start on the month. Ran the dog around the block before church, and then ran the Planet Walk in the afternoon with Seth.

AM - ran the dog around the block, then ran to the hospital and back to get my TB test results (negative). 7:00/mile average pace, 6 miles total. May run again this evening with the stroller, but we'll see.

PM - ran the Planet Walk with Seth after work.

Wow, what an amazingly nice morning, sunny and also 50 degrees. I ran the dog around the block, and then ran to First Dam and back. 7:11/mile average pace. It's a lot easier to get motivated to run when the weather is like this.

noon - ran home from work, grabbed a snack, and then ran the Landfill Loop. Another beautiful wind and running was easy. 6:33/mile average pace.

Ran with Cody this morning. We did an out-and-back to First Dam, and 8x3-minute fartlek with 1-minute recovery. I just tried to stay with Cody and not get dropped too often. Kept it as a true fartlek ("speed-play"), and didn't look at my watch the entire time. It was a nice morning; wet roads but no ice or precipitation, a relief after seeing the rain and snow last night. 6:30/mile average pace for the run.

After a wild night in Vegas, we drove to King City, CA to see Stacy's folks. I was planning on running in Vegas in morning, but Seth was up most the night, so I ended up waiting until evening in King City to run. Glad I did; it was beautiful. I found a regional park with dirt trails, and ran around there, and explored a little bit of town too. It is very lush and green here, with rolling hills. Temps in the upper 50s.

Did my "long run" up Pine Canyon Rd outside of King City. I ran an out-and-back, and it was uphill going out and downhill coming back. Very pretty landscape, green rolling hills and agriculture everywhere.

Ran for 60 minutes in the regional park in King City. I just ran around on the network of dirt trails. None of the trails go for very long, but there was enough of them to keep me occupied. We start driving home today.

AM - ran 3 miles from our hotel in Nowhereville, NV. Actually, I think it was Winnemucca or something like that. It was cold out.

PM - finally finished our road trip, and I'm glad to be home. We got home early enough for me to grab a run on the Lanfill Loop (5.5 miles)

I realized I had way too many miles this week, so just did 4 miles with Seth today.

My insurance, blood tests, x-rays, and everything else came through, so I started Enbrel today. I gave myself the first injection (which was surprisingly painless and easy), so now it's wait and see what happens. For most people, it doesn't kick in for a week or two, but others have instant improvement. On this blog I don't often mention all my specific body parts that hurt (seems kind of pointless), but right now it's my entire left foot (around the toe joints), the big toe on my right foot (can barely bend it), my left hip, my lower back (stiffness mostly), the tendons at the top of the both hamstrings, and occasionally my neck (althought that's been almost 100% lately). In additional my left lower shin has been swollen for several months, but has not actually hurt since the Moab race. Umm...I think that's it. I hope the Enbrel helps all those things, but even if it helps half of them, I will be better off.

I have too many miles this week, so I didn't run today. I did ride my bike around town for errands, about 6 miles worth, so I'll count that as 1 cross training mile.

Brr...way too cold out in the morning to run. I elected instead to sip coffee all morning, listen to Dave Ramsey podcasts, and make race course maps, which is sadly my ideal Saturday morning (by the way, check out the Canyonlands Half website for one of my latest projects). I had also thought about running the Shamrock Shuffle 5K in Smithfield this morning, enticed by the $5 $4 entry fee (get $1 off for wearing green), but Gil already had a vet appointment, which filled my quota for scheduled activities on a Saturday morning. Plus the whole "too cold" thing I mentioned earlier.

Anyway, I finally got out for a run around 2:30PM, and it was much nicer out, although still too cold for my liking. I ran the Millville Hill Loop, and old favorite. I was feeling good, mostly likely due to the Enbrel plus sipping coffee all morning, and averaged 6:25/mile for the 13-mile run. I never got much under 6:00/mile for any given stretch, even the downhill miles, but just kept a steady pace the whole way. Good run.

Long commute today. Got up at 3:15AM, took the shuttle to the airport for a 6:50am flight to Denver. Arrived in Denver, shuttled to the car rental, got my car, drove 30 minutes to Westminster. Set up for the meeting, then 6 hours worth of meetings. Drove back to the car rental, bought gas, dropped off the car, shuttled back to the airport. Checked in, found out they oversold my flight, spent about 30 minutes going through security, got to my gate, got a real seat secured, wolfed down some dinner, flew to Salt Lake, took the shuttle back to Logan. Went to bed. Somewhere in there, I forgot to run.

I slept in this morning and took half the day off work, since I got in 18 hours yesterday. I ran Gil for a miles, then did 2.5 miles on my own, and picked up Seth and did the Lanfill Loop with him (5.5 miles). 9.25 miles total. Now it's time to watch USU win, and then off to work for the afternoon.

Met Jon at the Fairgrounds, and did the Young Ward - ICON Loop, including a 6-mile tempo. The faster miles were 6:10-6:15 pace. Sitting at work all day was killing my back and right SI joint, but running felt great. Too bad I can't run all day.

Longish run with Cody today. I had a meeting all morning, so we went in the early afternoon, and it was quite nice out We ran out to Hollow Road and back on the TOU course (mostly). I was feeling tired from the week, plus had a headwind going out, but for some reason was pushing 6:30 to 6:45 pace for the first few miles (probably from drinking coffee all morning). We hit a few 6:20-6:30 miles coming back with the wind, and stayed pretty steady to the end. I think our average pace was a little over 6:45/mile.

AM - lots of new snow this morning, probably about 8 inches are on the ground right now. Rather than deal with slippery roads and dangerous cars, I elected for the treadmill at the gym. It had been quite a while since I'd been there, and I forgot how boring it is. Hopefully I will not have to do this much, but the forecast for the rest of the week looks bleak. Did 1.5 miles running to the gym and back, and 6 miles on the treadmill at the gym, averaging about 7:00/mile.

PM - planet walk with Jon and Cody. Slow.
